First tuning attempt

The Benjamin Marauder air rifle can be tuned. You can adjust the trigger and the rifles velocities for different fill pressures.

First tuning attempt

Ok, here are the results of my first tuning attempts. These were chronied with an iphone app (Chrono Connect Pro) so I'm not certain of true accuracy but maybe in the ball park. Stock gun (.25 cal) and settings except for VMS wide open. JSP Kings, always from 3000 fill. My goal is to get the highest achievable power for 16 shots. Suggestions?

String 35 is how I used to tune my Gen I 25 M-rod, but I had to fill to 3200 psi 16 shots between 860 and 880 FPS with Kings. To get 24 good shots from 3000 psi fill, I usually had to drop peak power down to 830 FPS.

Unless you're willing to fill a little higher, I'd say that tune is pretty good.

25 W-rod | 08 shots @ 70 FPE -2% | 3100 fill
25 M-rod | 40 shots @ 35 FPE -4% | 3100 fill
22 M-rod | 51 shots @ 25 FPE -4% | 3100 fill
17 M-rod | 50 shots @ 19 FPE -4% | 2500 fill
25 P_rod | 16 shots @ 29 FPE -3% | 2100 fill

Thanks Ray. What would you expect in FPS by increasing HS? Decreasing? What about increase/decrease HT? I still haven't wrapped my brain around cause and effect.

Thanks,
Steve

As you raise hammer energy, it raises peak velocity, but also shifts your good shot string to a higher fill pressure.

Hammer energy is increased by either increasing hammer spring preload or by increasing hammer throw.

In the stock gun, they are equal. One turn CW on HT is equal to one turn CCW on HS preload for decreasing hammer energy and vice versa. So a tune of HS +2, HT +2 will give you the same shot string as +6, +6. VMS just chokes the valve output which reduces peak velocity. If you constrict it enough, it will add some more good shots (within a given extreme spread) on the down side of the shot string.

The most important thing to remember is these settings will move as you shoot unless you take steps to prevent them from moving. Loctite is not the right thing to use here because it cures then if you make any changes, it breaks the hold and crumbles putting a bunch of debris into your gun. Vibratite VC-3 works very well for this application.

I have to fill to 3200 to reveal the bell curve and use the sweet spot at these power levels. HST at 7 turns in and a very short (way in) HTA to get kings averaging 885 fps. The only mod is transfer port drilled to 1/8 inch.

And yes your tune will drift off rapidly and I can attest that locktite and teflon tape won't fix adjustments in place.
Experience is gained through lack of experience. So true.
