Marauder gets 3 groudhogs today - GRAPHIC

Postby randy_68 on Sun May 10, 2009 10:05 am

There is a small farm that I have permission to hunt that is about 5 miles from me. Last year I shot 9 groudhogs there with my AA and B51. Today I took the Marauder to see what it could do. The old farmhose was burned down this spring and pushed into the basement so I didn't know how it would affect the groundhogs. I shot several off the concrete porch last year.
I parked my truck behind the grain bins. loaded my gun and started sneaking around the first bin. When I got to the edge to see around the bin there were 3 groundhogs sitting on the concrete pad that I just drove by. I was over 50 yards away and needed to get closer but the big momma had me pinned down and I couldn't get thru the opening to the shed. There is an old truck parked there and it is where I wnted to be. I backtracked around the second bin and was able to stay out of sight and sneak up to the truck. Now I wwas 35 yards away and the groundhogs were still there. She was looking my way so I couldn't raise up to take a shot. After about 15 minutes she turned and I got lined up on the right side of her head. I put the crosshairs between the eye and ear and pulled the trigger. She dropped straight down and layed there kicking. I put 2 more shots into her and finished her off. The 2 small ones ran back under the concrete but it wasn't long when one came back out and I shot it. It fell into a hole along side the pad and I wasn't able to get it out. After a few miutes I went and retrieved the big one and circled around to the other side by a tree.
The pic with the old truck and bins is where I shot the first 2 from. I had just taken that pic when I saw a head pop out so I put the camera away and picked up my gun. Sure enough the other small one came out of the same hole that the momma did. I shot it at about 20 yrds. On the way back to the truck I shot those crackles. I think it was a great outing for my new Marauder. 3 groudhogs and 2 crackles in less than 2 hours.
One final note about my gun. The bolt handle came loose bolt on my last shot. I will contact Crosman tomorrow to see about a new one. I thought maybe it was screwed together but it appears to be pressed.

Great story and I enjoyed the pix.

I've never tried to shoot a groundhog with an air rifle before. But, you have changed my mind.
