Fox squirrel takes 25 Predator in the head

Postby chancers on Sat Jul 02, 2011 8:44 am

This fox squirrel got nailed with a 25 Predator (distance 25 yards), using 25 Marauder. This nutter was running up and down a large oak tree, chasing another nutter. That's the best because, when they are playing, nutters seem to pay less attention to their surroundings. The nutter was knocked out of the tree, hit the ground with a thud, and did the death dance for 3-4 seconds.

Entrance wound in the left ear.

Exit wound. Checking out the bulging globe.

I have noticed that, with head shots, the 25 Predators keep on sailing. Probably because there's so little tissue for the pellet to traverse. But, for body shots, the Predators don't pass completely through.

I was thinking that the look on that nutters face in the first pic really says it all. ...And then I got to that second pic. It's almost like a charicature (sp?) of him.

Thanks, chancers. I wasn't able to get out hunting this morning. This helps.

And have you ever shot the pressure down pretty low with your .25 and noticed performance? I'm wondering if the .25, loaded with Polymags, will still do the trick under 20 yards at a lower pressure of mayber 1800-2200psi. Shots would be significantly quieter at 1900psi, if they're still accurate enough. I'm sure they'd still have enough fpe on target to stick that Polymag deep enough into a squirrel.

Maybe this itch to use the .25 in close-range, noise-sensitive areas will go away once the .22 is close to the .25's accuracy. But I'd still like to be lobbing the .25 pellets into the nutters around here, if possible. ;)

Actually, I have not shot the rifle (at least for pest control purposes) at anything below 2500. That's mostly because I am pretty anal and actually do enjoy using the handpump. Pest control for me is essentially walking around the house, incidentally seeing a squirrel in the yard or tree, and running to my closet to get the rifle and fully loaded magazine (with Predators of course). I would bet that 1800 to 2200 psi would still be sufficient to take out squirrels up to 20 yards. Using the 25 Marauder close range is too much fun. With the 25 Marauder and Predator pellets, head shots, chest shots, belly shots, and even some butt shots do the trick. But, as soon as I get my 22 Mrod back from GD (with full tune and LW barrel), I will pretty much dedicate the 25 MRod for night time shooting.
