Hey Guys, Anyone own a range finder? I'm curious to know if they all operate the same. I just received one for X-mas, a Redfield Raider 550, seems to be a great unit so far but I was disappointed to find out (the hard way) that the eye piece focus ring also adjusts the brightness/contrast level (my only complaint so far) of the aiming reticle and yardage info. So when I first turned it on I couldn't see anything, so I figured the battery was dead (should of tested it first, dope). So off to the store for a new battery, $10 bucks later, only to see the same thing (nothing). Then for some reason, I decided to turn the focus ring and wouldn't you know it, up comes the display. So after double checking the damn manual, it says nothing about turning the focus ring to brighten the display. Mother F*%$ers! So is it just Redfield or do other units operate like this. Hey Steve, I recently bought a Leupold RX-II rangefinder and I love it! The only downside (like yours) is that the eye piece adjusts both reticle clarity and image focus. Unfortunately at ranges under 15 yards both reticle and image cannot be focused at the same time (one is in focus while the other is not), but at ranges beyond 20 yards everything is perfectly clear. I guess most of these rangefinders work pretty much the same way. Other than that it is a fairly reliable and extremely useful unit.Hope this helps.

I have a Nikon Laser 800 that I've had for about 10- 15 years and there is no focus on it . You just push a button. My only complaint about it is that it only goes to 800 yards and I sometimes shoot to 1000 yds .

Thanks Guys, appreciate the input. So I sent Redfield an email and they informed me that in fact the manual indicates that an adjustment to the focus ring may be necessary to view the display; it does? So I checked it for a third time and wouldn't you know it, it does in fact mention it (so ever briefly). Boy I'm getting old! The good news is that the range finder is in 100% agreement with my scope's side wheel yard markers (or vice versa). All my neighborhood target points were exactly the distance I had figured they were (based on the scope). Cheers. Steve
