Need Advice on Leapers Scope decision!

Postby TRuckus on Wed Sep 16, 2009 1:13 pm

I'm looking at the Leapers Accushot 3-12x44 vs. the Accushot 4-16x56. I'm wondering if it is worth paying for the extra magnification with the .22 marauder, specifically for hunting use (squirrels and other varmints). The 56mm is quite large and I don't want to regret buying such a large scope and find out I hardly use the extra magnification. Can anyone advice this novice airgunner???

I have the center point 4-16x scope on my marauder, talon SS, and Air Arms. All are .22

I hunt Squirrels and Rabbits, and plink or shoot paper at longer ranges. For me and my shooting style I think 16x works on animals out to 75 yards, and paper or cans out to 100 yards. I wish I had scope with more magnification to allow me to see the paper better at longer ranges.

If you'll be using your gun for hunting in the woods, or at short range (50 yards or less), go with the 44mm. If you plan to target shoot, or will be hunting in open areas with long shots on pests, get the 56mm. The extra mag does make a difference, but comes with the weight and bulk. You really need to have it rested to get the full benefit of the 16x mag.

The 56mm scope can be mounted with medium or high accushot rings. But, the objective lens cover will fit only with the high mounts - the scope will be too close to the barrel for it to fit with medium rings.

I think you should get the leapers 6-24x50 at least, i have one for my s400 but i think the best one is the 8-32x56 I also have one use for FT the only bad thing is a little heavy, but I think that scopes with big zoom can also use small zoom and it does not work the other way.

Probably overkill, but I love my Leapers Accushot 6-24x56 SWAT. Will never go back to a front AO scope.

I am returning my 3-12x44 leapers swat for the 6-24x56 leapers SWAT. I wanted a little bigger one for target farther down range so I turned my 3-12x44mm leapers to 4x and then to 6x and compaired what I would be losing and it really didn't seem like much of a trade off to go to a max of 24x instead of 16x. I'll let you know how I like it, it should be in on Monday.

You won't be disappointed, the only down side is the 10 yd minimum objective (for close range indoor shooting). Let me know how you made out. Steve

The one I have has the same limitation. Seems like the only ones that are for closer up are the bug buster line and they don't offer the magnigication I'm looking for. I'm more worried about the field of veiw but as long as what I am shooting at is 15 yrds away I don't think it will be a problem. I have tested what it looks like by setting my 3-12x44 to 4x and 6x and compairing and I think I will be ok with it to get the 24x magnifiaction on the 6-24X56mm.

Kind of late now, but I could have given you a field of view estimate with 24X @ 15 yds. Without actually measuring it (not home to get a quick measure), my guess it's probably inside of 18". I'm sure you looked it up, it's only 5.5' @ 100 yds.

I put the new scope on today and I am very happy with it. Got it sighted in after 2 shots off from my bench rest. The method where you lock the gun down, fire, and then just move the crosshairs to where the pellet shot is the easiest way to do it by far. Guess the only down fall is you have to have a stand to lock it in place so you know it didn't move.
Sent the 3-12x44 back to pyramid air for a refund. Cost me $10.20 to ship it back UPS ground which i thought was kind of high for 4 lbs. Hope they don't charge me a restocking fee since i had them install it originally and they didn't send the box along with the gun and it is supposed to be in the original packaging.
