Optic Advice

What should I go with? I don't need a lighted reticle. I don't see how mil-dot would work for .177 pellets.
I'll be shooting paper and pests inside of 50 feet, with a possible stretch of 100 feet.

At 50 feet and less you could get by with just about any scope?

on both my Talon SS and my S410 (both .22) I have the centerpoint 4-16 mildot with lighted reticle.

For my SS it is fine, but for my s410 (that can reach out farther) I find it to be slightly under-powered for the longer range shots.

I like to shoot the s410 at longer ranges because it has a little more punch

My best 50 yard groups with the s410:

if all you're gonna shoot is 50'-100' get any decent AG or rimfire rated scope...the smaller the target, the more magnification, though.

yesterday i head shot a lizard from a measured 16 yards (48') using a 2x scope and had more than adequate sight picture. (the head was approximately 3/8"x3/8" square)

Don't sell the mil-dot short. I got one quite by accident. I ordered a Tech Force scope with the 4 Plex. It came with the mil-dot. I put it on my Marauder. I use the Marauder primarily for plinking and pest control on the farm. Occasionally I'll take a long shot at rocks along the creek. I don't try to do anything scientific, I just pick a dot, place it on the rock and shoot. If I am high or low, I can pick another dot. For me, using a dot for hold over feels a lot better than just guesstimating with the cross hair or even the 4 plex. It seems more precise.

Bottom line is that I am happy they sent me the wrong scope. Even if you are not going to get technical with the dots, they improve long range plinking by giving you a precise aiming point.

Just my two cents worth, and probably worth exactly what you paid for it.....

Hello to all,

I'm a new to this Forum and as new to the use of airrifles and thoroughly confused as to which scope to purchase when I do purchase the Marauder .22 or possibly the .25.

The rifle will be used for varmits on our property, primarily ground squirrels. The range of shooting will vary from about 20 yards to about 75 yards, perhaps a little farther.

I know absolutely zero about scopes, except the 4x30 on my 881 Daisy is junk, pretty much like the gun it's hung on.

I does seem to me that a lighted receital, with a large field of view would be the best. But, what happens when I'm shooting at close range (20 yard), etc. or between 20 yards and the outer limits of 75 + yards. Perhaps I'm expecting to much from the M22 or M25. ?

I have a 22 rifle that shoots longs,(powder type), with the scope set at 100yards, however the neighbors would not be happy about the amount of shooting I intend on doing.

I have no concept of this :?:

Best to all,

Jim,
Most of my shooting with my .177 is done within the same distances as you.
Here are some of the things I have learned in simplified terms:
Mil dot rectiles are very common and can be very useful when moving between different target distances, even between 50-100 feet.
At short shooting distances, parallax error becomes an issue. Parallax is a shift in where your eye SEES the rectile(crosshair) on the target. Slight movements in your eye position behind the scope will shift that spot even when the scope is motionless. I assume this is a common cause of having our air rifles shooting in different spots(POI shift). This can virtually be eliminated with careful adjustments of your objective lens(focus).
You will need rings for a 3/8 or 11mm dovetail rings.
Check out the CenterPoint scopes at your local Walmart. They are a Crosman product. They are very reasonably priced for the quality level you get. They have zoom features for longer shots, they have mil dot rectiles, and very importantly they have front Adjustable Objectives allowing you to focus(eliminate parallax) down to about 5 yards.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck and happy shooting.
Paul

Also-When you eventually decide on a scope, let me suggest you begin by using the eyepiece to carefully focus the rectile image, then sighting it in at the longer distances first since the further away your target is, the less parallax error you will experience.

Well guys, After all the bragging I did about my latest scope choice, a Leapers Accushot SWAT, looks like I have to send it back for repair/replacement. Under certainly lighting conditions or angle to the sun, I get a fuzzyiness and double images. Then it will be normal at other angles or in more shade covered viewing. Friggin weird!
