Scope Question

Postby Bruce Jarrett on Mon Nov 08, 2010 1:16 pm

I have a Leapers 3-12x 44AO swat scope. I shoot at 50yds and 100yds. Fortunately my parallax setting at 50 yds and 100yds agree with the markings on the knob.I love the scope, all knobs move smoothly and the windage and elev knobs move impact according to what they should.I have it sighted in at 50yds and I 'm getting .5 inch groups quite often. It shoots at the same spot whether I'm at 3 power or 12 power at 50yds. The strange thing is at 100yds and 12 power I use the bottom mil dot which is # 6 to get a bullseye but when I drop down to 3 power I have to use the # 2 mil dot. Why at 50yds does it shoot the same point no matter the power but at 100yds there is a big difference ? Each mil dot equates to about 7 inches so from #6 to #2 is a big difference. I need to be able to use the 3 power because I have a ATN PS 22 night scope that goes in front of my day scope but as magnification goes up resolution goes down and 3 power is where I like it for night shooting. Last night I shot a .507 inch group with the night sight at 50yds but I wasn't even on paper at 100yds until today when I figured out that I had to use #2 at 100yds. Thanks

I guess you can't use the mil dots for cross hair replacement for shooting at different ranges if you are going to change power settings. I guess you can only use mil dots for range estimates. I just shot at 100yds at a tall target and at 3x and 12x the drop from 50yds to 100yds at 845fps were both 14 inches using the cross hairs. So I guess there is nothing wrong with the scope its just the limitation of mil dots and the miss use of them. If I would always use the same power setting then I could use the mil dots to aim with but if I change power settings then my point of impact is going to change.

Your POI doesn't change, It's basically compared to your field of view on a higher power. As you in crease your magnification your mil-dots kinda become smaller in scale. I keep a cheat card with me that I printed out with the help of Chair Gun.

That way if I need to use a higher power I always know the mil dots.

And if you want the TECHY parts of it here..
On variable power scopes, the correct power for the Mildots to be accurate will depend on whether it's a First Focal Plane (FFP) scope or a Second Focal Plane (SFP) scope. On FFP scopes the appearance of the reticle changes with the power adjustment (the reticles don't change size, they're just magnified along with the rest of the view), so it is always accurate regardless of which power setting you're on. On a SFP scope, the reticles appears to be the same size through all the power settings so the mildots only subtends the correct size on one power setting, usually the highest power setting on the scope.

Here is a good place to read up on stuff related to Mil dots scopes
