Why I dont't work on things

The tank was empty, so reached for the pump. I was feeling the blow by so I knew it was blown. Started to disassemble and found a very tight fitting. Taped up the silver tube to protect from the taped up jaws, and I still maul the tube . But after further inspection the tube had a ton of pits. And SunOptic sells replacement for $8. So had to get a new 1 anyway. I feel better that it was damaged before I mangled it.

I use a piece of leather to protect stuff I hold in vice or vice grips and that works very well.

BTW, I rebuilt a used Benji pump I bought (that was not working) and the large sliver tube had lots of pitting from moisture. I asked the guy at Sun Optics (I think his name was Sonny) and he said just polish the high spots down with some scotch brite and it is fine. He was right. It has been working fine every since. Of course I mostly use my bottles for fills, but I break out the hand pump regularly.
