Compressor to Hand Pump Airleak Question

Postby 1beezer » Fri Apr 11, 2014 9:10 am

I put the inline water filter with the 1/4" Foster connection to my hand pump. When I hook the air compressor to it there are air leaks between the pump base and the big brass nut at the bottom of the shaft. I can see and feel where the air is coming from between the round of the hole underneath the hex sides of the nut. This must be common or not. It's a new pump. Curious.

I know people here boost their pumps. Could someone please tell me if air leaks out from under the pump shaft when the compressor is hooked up to it at say 20-30#.

Put about 5 wraps of Teflon tape on the threads of the bottom nut and it will either slow down or stop leaking. Leaking at that joint does not harm anything and is not a real problem. The pump was not designed to have pressure on that point. A little lost air prior to first stage compression is not a big deal.

Mine did this at first too. I unscrewed it and replaced the o-ring that was in there. Now it has just the tiniest of leaks.

I know that nut is cranked pretty tight.

Good post!

I had the same problem just now when I was trying the boost mod. There was so much air leak that I couldn't even feel/see any difference with the air tank attached. After putting a bit of Teflon tape, the pump was dramatically different.

I'd like to point out something for other new users, the tape should go just beneath the hex part of the nut. There is no thread at that point... Took me a minute to figure out where I was suppose to put the tape...

In fact, not need to completely remove the nut, about 5 turns, just enough for you to wrap some Teflon between the gap.

Good luck!
