Point of impact changing with range (horizontally)

Postby Vilhaug » Fri Jul 18, 2014 4:45 pm

So here is my POI issue:

At roughly twenty yards, my gun is spot on shooting predator polymag. (right target, 10 pellets)
At about thirty yards, the grouping is still tight, but what is causing it to shift so far to the right? (left target, 5 pellets)

The wind was almost nonexistent, but if it was influencing the group, it should have shifted to the left.

Is this a bent barrel issue?

if you don't think there is wind , there is.

as with any gun bow ect. sight in at our farthest target( inside)

99% of the time it's the shooter, not the gun.

Ah wind ...Shoot AG bench rest sometime ! ... or at least do enough bench shooting where you can have flags that show wind present and direction.
Your eyes will be big as man hole covers when you realize just how little wind it takes to move the pellets around

Wind at your shooting position and wind down range can be very different :o

Pellets could also be flying with a slight HELIX flight path ? In that case under equal shooting conditions moving target closer and further from your zero range will have POI shifting vertically and horizontally at the same time.
When this happens CHANGE THE SPEED or change pellet type ;)

I do recognize there was a slight wind, but based on the direction of the wind, the pellet should have drifted to the left.
That's what was so perplexing.

I guess Motorhead may be on to something suggesting the helix flight path. Ill have to try some different pellets!

Thanks for the ideas.

I have a pellet trap. On the front I taped layers of duct tape and then taped the paper target to the duct tape surface.

All barrels are bent. There is no such thing as a perfectly straight barrel. Its maximum run out at the muzzle should be oriented in the vertical plane but I doubt Crosman takes the time to do this when they drill the transfer port.

Or scope isn't aligned with the barrel, try 40 yards and see if it shoots a bit further right
