Rate the Eating of Pigeon

Postby ricko54 » Fri Jun 20, 2014 8:25 am

I've seen some posts in various places about eating pigeon, as well as some posts on how to plate a fancy dish of squab! I was wondering if those of you who shoot pigeons, have tried country pigeon (not city pigeon), could rate it 1-10, with 10 being as good as baked/fried chicken! I've never had the fancy squab in a 5 star restaurant, nor have I just had plain old country pigeon. I have had to eat crow a couple of times in my life (lol) and as we all know, that not a good taste!!

Just for clarification, I spoke of country pigeon and city pigeon. The difference being country pigeons hang around farms eating 100% grains, and city pigeons hang around parks eating popcorn and garbage dumpsters eating who knows what!

Just in case the rating get anywhere close to the 10 mark, could you also give us some insight as to how you prepared it? A recipe would be great.

Thank you in advance.

I wouldn't eat city ones.
99% of the time it's the shooter, not the gun.

Wrap the breast meat in bacon, bake at 350 for 30~45 minutes on a cookie sheet, yum!

Thanks for your input, I'll surely have to give it a go. I just have to somehow learn to get over that stigma associated with pigeons regarding the fact that where there are pigeons, there's also a whole lot of white wash! LOL

I was working on a bridge in Hunts Point Bronx over the Bronx river a while back. It was a terribly cold winter. And a old lady would pick up all the pigeon that froze to Death along the shore line.

I am no expert on the subject but how could a city pigeon be worse than many other favorite foods we eat. Swine will eat any and everything and I mean anything that is eatable yet everyone loves bacon, pork chops, tenderloin, etc. Catfish eat all kinds of dead bugs, worms, snails, etc. Farm raised are supposed to be the worst cause they are fed chicken shit and other junk. Dont even get started on the pesticides, steriods and antibiotics these raised creatures are given. Includes cattle, chickens etc. So how can a wild creature be any worse than a farm raised one?

Maybe it's like other game animals. Venison can taste very different depending on the deers diet.

As I understand it pigeon meat has a pretty strong flavor. Maybe pigeons that eat garbage, puke etc. Just don't taste very good...

True, I noticed a big difference in the taste of venison from Central Texas to West Texas. Also they say the hogs around the gulf coast taste horrible because of their diet there.
