Gen 2 hammer spring weight

Postby jfm30204 » Mon Mar 16, 2015 9:59 am

I remember seeing somewhere that the Gen 2s have stronger hammer springs than Gen 1s, but I can't find the Gen 2 spring weight. If someone could provide that I would be appreciative.

No. Gen II and Gen II have the same hammer spring - approximately 6 pounds. They have a stiffer valve spring that presses the poppet against the valve seat. It reduces the peak power, but flattens the shot string.

If you want higher power, one good place to start is swap in a lighter valve spring and a stiffer hammer spring.

Thanks, Ray. Still working on that first tune but not much progress yet for pellets burned. Now reading the long report Marauder Multifactor Experimentation.

One thing I have noticed, though, is that, using JSB Exacts, it seems for every 8 shot group, where the main group may be < .5" over 29 yards, there will always be a couple of fliers to expand the group out to 1", or a bit more or less. That's 25% and seems too high. Yesterday, I shot several groups with varying degrees of success spread-wise, but there was one where 6 pellets entered the same slightly oblong hole, and then there were two - one at 2:00 and another at 4:00 - that were both about .75" out. I would hope you would have no more fliers than, say, 1 in 16 or certainly no more than 1 in 8, but, due to my lack of experience, I do not know if this is typical or not. I hope that it isn't.

All Gen II hammer springs have a different part number than Gen I. I do believe Gen II are slightly stronger and have closer specs to what most call #10lb springs. I'll post those specs this evening, along with a stock Gen I, and 10 and 12lb max load springs.

FWIW:

All springs have an OD of 0.475-0.480 and length of 2.5"

Gen I Mrod: Wire dia = 0.048" approx. 12 coils

Gen 2 Mrod: Wire dia = 0.051" approx. 13 coils

A2A 10lb spring: Wire dia = 0.053" approx. coils 16

McMaster-Carr 12lb spring: Wire dia = 0.054" approx. coils 15

While the 12lb spring seems to be all the rage, the 10lb I just installed in my MDRL seems a little too strong. I'll be getting a crosman Gen II spring on my next crosman order.

PM me you address, and can send you one of 12lb.
