.25 Benjamin Marauder (Custom PerforaParts)

Postby KrypTonianBLAST » Mon Mar 16, 2015 7:01 pm

I have a brand new .25cal (Hardwood Stock) Benjamin Marauder.
I would like to do some power/Effiency Tuning.
I see custom parts such as: 1) 12.5lbs Hammer Spring, 2) War Valve, 3) War NBH 4) War3D Depinger

As far as performance,

What all would you suggest I buy/install? And will local gun shop help with installs if I have trouble? I really want to max out my .25 Marauder but at the same time I don't want to go to far and mess the gun up!

What do you want to max it out for?

Shot count?

A couple shots with ubber heavy pellets at extreme power?

I'm working on my .25 right now. I've found a power level that works well for what I am doing, and now I am trying to get more shots at that power level myself.

Looking to get more shots for my 27.8grain benjamin domed pellets. And at the same time make the gun quieter, and be able to use with the Eujin 43.2grain pellets or larger one-shot hollow points made by Mr.Hollowpoint. Maybe up to 85grains or so.

All at the same time? :D

Most of the guys seem to tune for shot count with the 25.39 JSB Exact.

Tuning for power probably starts with opening up the transfer port for efficiency

and putting in a heavier spring for power.

Throwing a real heavy weight pellet in my opinion is not going the same as getting good shot count with a middle weight pellet.

Add a bottle and an LDC and you can get there.

I like lots of shots per fill because I don't want to carry around my fill gear or go back to the car for a re-fill. So I settle on lower power. A bonus is you get lower noise too. Downside is my fill peak pressure is usually a bit high at 3100 to 3200 psi.

How many FPS does your .25 Marauder average on the lower power setting?

I'm just brainstorming....This is my goal for my .25cal Benjamin Marauder 1)powerful 2) increased shots per fill efficiency 3) quiet....killing machine for mainly hunting squirrel/rabbit/raccoon/crow/dove/pigeon.

Would installing those accessories and turning down the power settings do any good?

Im new to the "Air Rifle World" so I'm trying to soak up as much advise from you experienced air riflemen as possible.

I'm not as experienced as most here but I can give you an answer I use.

Gen II SynRod .25 ALL STOCK. NO MODS
Small game (what you listed)
Taking RayK advice, I tuned for a higher shot count using something called the NIBLT (New Improved BLT) You can search for it on this forum. 30 good shots at 35 FPE averaging 790fps. I use JSB King 25.4 for this tune.

Larger game
I use a power tune and get 16+ good shots averaging 850fps and around 42 FPE. H&N Baracuda Hunters hit hard and poi is where my JSB King 25.4 hit.

I vary the setting depending on use. My SynRod seems to hold at whatever setting I use. It may wander on yours and some use a type of loctite. I used Vibra-TITE VC-3 Threadmate. I can move the adjustments and they stay.

Both tunes are quiet and backyard friendly.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

ps Forgot to add, keep good notes while tuning so you can get back to what you want.

It really depends on your answer to number 1, how powerful do you need/want? The more power, the less shots. It is always a trade off. For the game you mentioned, at reasonable air gun ranges, I think the stock valve/hammer spring should suffice for the power you will need. For hunting, 16 or 24 shots is usually plenty.

If you settle for a 35FPE tune, you may find it "quiet enough" for your back yard. If not or going with a 40+ FPE, add a LDC of your choice. The cross-flow depinger helps in both cases. Many are saying the Mrod NBH is significantly reducing noise, as well.

My recommendation for just starting out, is learn to tune it (chrony) and make sure accuracy is good, before adding internal mods.

Just my opinion after having used both.

PCPs are very different than powder burners, so the local gunsmith is probably not the right place to get help.

Buy or borrow a chrony and find out where your current good shots are. If you are shooting within 50 yards, a 4% extreme spread works well to keep your point of impact close together. That means your shot string may start out around 830 FPS then rise up to 860 FPS then drop back down until it crosses 830 again. Those will be your "usable" shots per fill. You must learn at what fill pressure that first shot happens (maybe around 3100 psi) then how many shots until that last shot happens (maybe after 24 shots if things go well).

You want to use good pellets too. Predator Polymags are more expensive, but they are very effective on critters (because they expand like a good hollowpoint should and they tend to be more accurate than most other hollowpoint pellets. JSB Kings are often the most accurate and they do a good job on most critters.

Of all the critters you mentioned, coons are by far the toughest, with squirrels second toughest, then crows. The rest are pretty soft/fragile and die as long as you hit them.

Oh, if you do want a tuner, Travis at Wicked Air Rifles does tunes and has high power parts you need/want if you decide to go high power. http://wickedairrifles.com/
