25 Cal Valve Mod Benefits

Postby jimmyk » Thu Jul 03, 2014 7:35 pm

A while back I modded my 25 looking for more or equal power at a lower fill pressure. I was filling to 3200-3300 to be able to shoot Kings around 900 FPS. With the fairly conservative mods to the valve and barrel port I'm now filling to 2700-2800 and can easily hit the 900fps average that I wanted over 20 shots. Out of boredom a few days ago I decided to crack it up to max energy, fill to 3200 and shoot ten pellets each of Kings, Benjamin Domes and Baracuda 31's. I know it could be tuned a lot better for better shot count but I just wanted to keep everything even and go with 3200 and let the chips fall where they may. I wasn't shooting at a target to see how it would group but probably will in the near future. The Baracuda's produced 59fpe and the string looked great for 10 shots and beyond and would probably make a great hunting setup for larger vermin. Anyway I turned everything back to normal but it's nice knowing I have the energy there if needed. Attached is the data from my test..

Nice, thanks for sharing very useful information and for using the same fill pressure and showing the difference between pellets.
Did you make any changes to your hammer spring or is a stock spring?
Thx, Randy

Good to know, When I get my 2 cricket in I plan to tune the Marauder up to the high 900s and find some super soft hollow point pellets and see if I can really blow up the sparrows big time.

So funny! My 177 M-rod kills every sparrow-sized bird instantly. I can't imagine what overkill the 25 is on them. It must create feather powder.

But the 25 is awesome for crows. They can shake off a 177 pellet...and sometimes a 22 pellet.

Yea with the 25 you really need to know your back stop a sparrow will not stop your pellet, I even shoot right through the Euro Doves ,,
Crows and Ravens get a pass around me, Had them as pets as a kid and have one now that would make one of those 2000. dollar parrots look like a retard.
Only has a 30 word vocabulary but figures stuff out very fast,,,

Ravens are very cool and fully protected in CA.

Crows are another story. Yes, they are smart, but they are obnoxious. They have an abrasive caw and they pull trash out of the cans every chance they get. And they seem to be thriving in huge numbers in urban areas around here.

Technically, it is illegal to kill crows with a pellet gun in CA too (only shotgun, archery, or falconry). But I'm sure plenty of people do it. There is a crow season that lasts 124 days from first saturday in december, but they tend to hang out in urban areas where you can't shoot a shotgun, showing again how smart they are.

http://www.fgc.ca.gov/regulations/curre ... s.aspx#485
(a) Shotgun, Falconry, and Archery Seasons, and Bag and Possession Limits.
(1) Season: The first Saturday in December and extending for 124 consecutive days.
(2) Daily Bag and Possession Limits
Bag Limit: 24 crows per day
Possession Limit: double the daily bag limit
(3) Area: Statewide: see closure area (d) below
(b) Crows may only be taken by shotguns 10 gauge or smaller using shot shells only and incapable of holding more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined, bow and arrow, and falconry. Crows may not be hunted from aircraft.

Wow a 10 gauge is a big gun for crows,
Strange laws,
I was told by a Game Warden in
Texas you have to have a hunting permit(license) to hunt anything, Rattle snakes , sparrows, or any non game animal,

Your Game Warden is full of it. You do not have to posses a hunting license in Texas to hunt non game animals.

Crows may not be hunted from aircraft.

Yes, CA laws can be ridiculous. I wonder what situation motivated this part of the law? Was hunting crows from aircraft really a problem?

We are also not allowed any electronics on our hunting equipment. That means no night vision, no illuminated reticles, no flashlights, no pin-lights on your bow, no gun/bow mounted range finder, etc.

I like the Texas hunting laws. Seems like you can do almost anything as long as you aren't hurting other people or their property. Shooting pest pigs from a helicopter with a semi-auto high powered rifle seems like it would be great fun.
