First post and pellet swaging question

Postby AirJunkie » Fri Jan 09, 2015 12:40 pm

I have had a .22 marauder for over a year now and am still just loving it. Its had over 12k rounds through it and still works great. The barrel was replaced early on because the original had a gouge which scratched the pellet near the choke. Crossman was very pleasant to work with and the replacement barrel is working great.

Now for the question:

I want to machine pellet dies that makes pellets very similar to the Promethius piledriver pellets found at AoA. Has anyone had good accuracy results from some of the pellet swaging dies available online? I like the idea of the round nose and boat tail design, but if it had a recess in the back so the weight is less that would be ideal. Apparently the piledrivers retain a lot more energy than the typical diablo shaped pellets. I would like to machine dies that incorporate this design but would like to know if others have tried those pellets out of their marauders.

Thanks.

The piledrivers caught my eye also, I wish they made them in .25 maybe we should contact the manufacturer and ask them to consider making a .25

Here is a great video that talks about pellet design, reviews the piledriver pellet, and compares it to other pellets over a chrony.

Swaging your own pellets
I like this kit, but I have not seen anything on the accuracy. If anyone has please let me know.

This video gives you a closer view of the different parts of the system.

I am interested in this subject, and I am looking to make my own in .25 if possible. If you decide to machine pellet dies for others, please let me know :D

I have watched all of those videos and some of them are what got me thinking about swaging my own pellets. And the upcoming zombie apocalypse where there is a world with very difficult to obtain gunpowder and ammo shortages. :) All jokes aside, difficulty in obtaining .22 ammo led me to airguns anyway. I did find some info about piledrivers and low rate of twist barrels that cause some instability. Maybe some more testing would be a good idea. I am considering dropping $14 to see how they do for me. That's cheaper than going through the trial and error of making dies...etc. I will order some this week and let you all know what the results are when I can. That will be the determining factor to see if its worth pursuing that design in the future.

Good info.

Here is a link to a forum post where someone was trying to design a .25 pellet that would fit in a marauder mag. It is back from 2013, and it looks like it never got going :(

After reading this I wondered how someone would go about making a bullet mold :?:

Hopefully someone on the forum will find it useful and create a heavy pellet for the marauder .25. It would be cool if there were 2 versions, one that fit the .25 mag, and a longer heavier one that only worked with a single shot tray :D

The first video is pretty neat until the hand grinding and fluting. Pretty rough. I like the concept though. Making the mold is not too difficult with some of the CNC stuff out there. I am going to model some pellet shapes that I think will work and post them on this thread. There are a few dimensions that I would like to get though. What is the inside dimension of the barrel at the end of the choke not including the lands. Basically the major ID? For .177, .22, & .25?
Given these dimensions and the overall length a pellet can fit in the magazine I can model something up and figure out the weight based on the density of lead and the volume of material.

More stuff coming soon.

If you are interested in buying swaged bullets instead of making them, at least for a start, you could try here: http://www.ratsniperslugs.com/home.html

I have no experieince with them as I am happy with .22 pellets, but there have been lots of good results reported on the Yellow . . . .

Looks like an interesting pellet design. I modeled a pellet so we will see if it will post. it needs some work but the idea is there.
I tried the photo bucket posting thing but it didnt seem to work. Any better way to post a picture?

I use Mr.Hollowpoint slugs in .25, Bob will swag them to the size you need. The are very accurate in my marauder. I use the single shot tray for the longer ones. He sent me a sample of the 55gr. spitzers and they are great. I have him size the slugs to .251. I just ordered some from Hunter's Supply and they are sized to .251. As soon as Ratsniper gets caught up on his slug orders I will be getting some of his slugs. Those are sized to .250.

Another link for you.

Corbins has been around in the powder burner arena for a long time and they make excellent equipment.

That Corbins site is a wealth of information. Very similar to what I want to do. It may be easier to buy one of his than machine my own.
On another note I had a 113 yard starling kill with my .22 mrod. 21.75 inches of elevation and 1/2 mildot of windage. Another one of those 1 shot 1 kill days. No video proof of it of course but it was exciting!!
