Heavier Hammer

Postby PakProtector » Tue Sep 17, 2013 5:51 am

If you fill in the pockets of a Marauder hammer with lead, you gain 30 grams. Useful for those hunting really high power. I glued in some fitted lead bits and then trimmed with a file. Fortunately, the hammer is hard, and the sides are not where the high loads happen on cocking. Got 95 FPE out of my 25 cal, and with an Even Bigger Valve more will be had shortly...:)
cheers,

What else did you change besides adding weight to the hammer to get 95 FPE?

I see a new product for Hill - hammer weights. ;)

with the largest .25 cal pellet the Eunjin 43.2 you would need about 1000 fps to make 95 FPE
close up i'm sure it is accurate but not too sure distance is any good ?

Not really some of these guys are using cast rounds that are 70 gr and bigger. Mr Hollowpoint has 50 grain. 22s. Just got some 26,30 grain. 22s myself. Haven't tuned a gun to shoot them tho.

not sure what you are meaning Anthony ?
cast round ?
you can not get a 70 gr cast round ball in .25 cal, a 25 cal cast round ball is only 23.4 gr
a 25 cal 70 gr cast would have to be a bullet shape not a round ball, unless there is someone making some super large pellets ?
it is my understanding the choked barrel of an Mrod is not friendly to cast bullet shapes making for really poor accuracy
you might want to check this with Mr Hollowpoint if you are planning on shooting some of his bullets in a Mrod barrel
i haven't heard he or anybody else is making any pellets larger then the Eunjins, have you ?
anybody shooting a 25 cal 70 gr bullet is probably shooting a non choked LW barrel for some really souped up power, not a stock Mrod barrel
again! the LARGEST 25 cal pellet i know of designed for a choked barrel is the Eunjin 43.2 pellet and it would have to be shot near 1000 FPS to make 95 FPE.

If there is a choke in a 25 M-rod barrel, it is very slight. I pushed pellets through my barrel and felt no constriction at all.

The 22, 177, and P-rod have very strong choke in the last inch or two. So much that it is difficult to push a pellet through the choked part.

These are what im talking about. They come in a variety of sizes. .217 I believe work well in the marauder barrels. When I finally get around to trying them i'll let you know how it goes. Hope this helps.

I know Doug has some heavyweight lead. And that needs some changes to the gun to get that lead moving @ an acceptable speed.

Doug did you use the lead you got from me to weight the hammer? Or do you add something to it before applying it to the hammer?

Anthony, the lead came from another source, but was quite similar; just smaller pieces. The Boolits are 53 gr from a 25 Auto mold. Mods to the rest? Oh hell yes, 24.5" hammer forged BSA barrel. Special valve with its exhaust .187 in diameter and angled forward at a 20-degree angle top the required list. there is other stuff too, but rather inconsequential in the power hunt. It will shortly have a bigger exhaust port, and a PEEK poppet to support itself on a significantly larger throat.

And, no it does not cotton to shooting E-J pellets at all.

And for my next trick...a boolit-shooting 22 cal...:) Hammer forged 22 Hornet liner, even bigger valve, a depleted Uranium hammer...and 39.3 gr boolits from an NOE mold( and a 57 gr Lyman casting, and likely a 44, and 50 too). Up to about 46 gr round or flat nose will fit a 25's magazine. Put a 22 cal star in there and run a 25 breech...heh-heh-heh
cheers,
