I know two guys who drilled small (1/16") holes at the rear sides of their Marauder shroud and it did not reduce report at all. I have also read posts where guys did it and claimed it helped, but they also did other mods at the same time confounding the source of the improvement.
Improving the air stripper makes the biggest difference. The stock air stripper barely gets any shot blast into the large rear shroud chamber, so that large space is not being used. To be really effective, the stripper needs to be moved forward away from the tip of the barrel. It would be worth giving up one of the four stock baffles to install a longer stripper that would do this.
Installing mr clean magic eraser, springs, hair curlers, etc, did not help when I tried it back in 2010 and only increased the chance of a pellet hitting something on the way out.
I've also noticed there is a point where adding more LDC does not help at all.
I bought a large, high-end LDC that has a great design, installed it on the end of my 12 FPE 177 M-rod, and both my wife and I agreed it was the same loudness either way (shooting indoors for comparison) with or without the LDC. It was clear the stock shroud, with air stripper holes enlarged, was getting the air blast noise to a limit - at least with a 12 FPE 177. There was still noise, but it was coming from the hammer, spring, valve, etc. I could not hear any of the other classic noises like ping or hammer bounce, but stock Marauders often have both of those noises too.
I read about "mouse fart" all the time, but the Marauders are still too noisy for shooting in an indoor range in an apartment or condo with thin walls.
The next step is to tune with very short hammer throw (e.g., HT near fully CW) as that makes a huge difference in reducing the remaining shot noise. It is going to be a low power tune, but the goal is ultra quiet.
