Tried the extech sound level meter...

But it gave similar readings for my Marauder in three configurations:

1) shroud on, but no baffles in.
2) stock with 4 baffles
3) modified with 2 extra baffles for a total of 6.

now the difference in all three was obvious to my human ear, but the meter showed about the same level for all three configurations.

I think Dave is right, you need an "impulse" meter for measuring airgun noise.

Mine just had slow and fast. I used fast, but it must be doing some sampling and averaging that washes out the true peak.

By the way, this is the same meter Paul capola uses to measure airgun noise on his videos for Pyramyd Air.

Yes, I tried both A and C.

I think it was 78 or something close to that.

However, i could hear a huge difference between no baffles, 4 baffles, and 6 baffles and it still registered around the same value for all three.

I even tried different placement of the meter, like off to the side and a ways away, but nothing gave reasonable results.

I sent the meter back. We need impulse meters to measure gunshot loudnesses.

Anyone know of a good impulse sound level meter?

I've got 93 dBA with fast response
92 dBC with fast response.

Thats measured 4 feet up, meter is indoors a little behind me on the 3~4 feet to the right, and me shooting the .22 Marauder with stock shroud and baffles installed...in the family room into the backyard. There may be some echoing going on and the meter was set to the 80-130 dB band.
More later when I can.

Apparently my meter can tell the difference between a Marauder and a Diana 350M .177 springer!!!
Meter/shooter in same place as before, this time shooting a 350M .177:

108.2 dBA fast
91.4 dBA slow
110.1 dBC fast
98.2 dBC slow

Well....I dunno Steve. Mine shows some promise if it can tell the difference between the .22 Marauder and 350M .177.
Thats a difference that I can hear.
I need to do Ray's experiment with the shroud off and see what happens before I'll say my meter is not acceptable.
Cant do Ray's experiment until tomorrow...because the nieghbors will be bothered. Big sound equals big trouble (outside).
I was using my sliding glass door, open at about 4 inches to muffle the sound of my 350.

This the meter I bought:

We were able to shoot it in a very large machine shop, so the noise was not an issue for the neighbors.
I put the meter about 4 feet to the side of the muzzle.

I'm really interested in getting the right kind of impulse meter if they exist and are not too expensive.

Does anyone know of an impulse meter suitable for measuring the report of airguns?
