Hill Prod LDC Review

Tim Hill had sent me a new Prod stock to test (see: http://www.marauderairrifle.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=10420) and surprised me with a Prod LDC in the package. :) A quick test on one of my Prods put a smile on my face. There is allot to like with this LDC. Along with the Prod, this will also fit the Crosman 1720T match Pistol. I will go over the details followed by some sound tests on two different Prod based guns. The sound tests will include with/without comparisons, along with comparison to MM Prod shroud extension.

Hill Prod LDC:

Installation:
The LDC comes fully assembled and wrapped in bubble wrap. It threads on to the end of the Prod shroud. Remove Prod end cap and screw on LDC. Doesn't get much easier than that.

Installed on 2201P:

Components:
• 5 3/8" X 0.873" Diameter Aluminum Tube
• End cap
• Threaded Adapter
• Five Hill Custom Baffles
• Baffle Tensioning Spring

LDC Components:
Image

Features:
• Screw on for a tight/aligned fit: No set-screws or sliding over the shroud that can mar your oem prod shroud.
• Easy disassembly: to clean out or change baffles
• Manageable length: Adds 5 5/8" to a Prod
• Based on proven design: Very close to GenII Mrod design
• Unobtrusive: Diameter is same as Mrod shroud and is not large enough to draw unwanted attention

Unobtrusive Profile:

Baffles:
Tim's baffles are longer and have a shallower angle to the cone, then Mrod GenII baffles. Diameters and openings are nearly the same. The LDC comes with five baffles or you can fit six of the crosman baffles.

Baffle Compare:

Testing and conclusion: Coming Soon! and hopefully some sharper/clearer pictures. ;)

Looks good!! I was wondering when the ball was going to get rolling on adapting the Gen2 type baffles! I wonder if we're ever going to see a smaller version of the "soundlock" baffles from Airforce pop up? I think those would be quite effective!!

Pete,

Will you be making them again? I still get asked occasionally, and will point them your way, if so.

It is on my 1720T, and has been upgraded to Gen II baffles. If the shroud mounts come off easily, I see no reason why not and could test the others on that and see. Not easy to swap to the other two guns, though.

Keep in mind, even though I'll be using a modified sound meter, its not the best for this sort of thing. Tim's LDC has 2 to 3 baffles more in front of the barrel, with less air volume in the back end of the shroud. My guess is that they will be in the same ballpark.

The breech riser with the larger shroud still looks cooler! :)

Testing:

I could not get any consistent readings on the meter. One shot would read near 100db, next 90db, with no perceptional change in sound.
Sorry, this test will only be subjective. :(

Gun: 2201 Pistol throwing 18.1g jsbs at 633fps (around 16fpe). 10" barrel with full length Prod shroud, but no baffles. I think this a typical semi-power tune, equivalent to what many get with minor upgrades to Prod.

Stock: Sounds louder than a stock Prod
MM Ext: Softer that stock Prod, with stock type tune
Hill: Very Quiet, pellet hitting stuffing in trap much louder

There is clear distinction between them.

Next is a Prod with Mrod barrel and 18" Prod diameter shroud. Shooting at 25fpe, which would be equivalent to a high power tune in a Prod.

I did a little work on the meter last night. Replaced some electrolytic caps that might have been bad, new battery, clean-up, etc. Hopefully it will be consistent now. Also got the next gun reassembled for testing. I had used it to test a 177 Mrod barrel, so had to put the 22 back on, shroud, etc. No biggie, just eats into limited "my" time.

Also, mid step in adding an adjustable pressure switch to the shoebox max, when I had to order a different fitting from MC. So, have to be careful on my fills from the guppy, while the compressor is down. Parts should be here today.

Very cool would it work with the 25 cal. I'm getting the 25 for my son and he lives in town with close by houses and I don't want to have any trouble with any one.
