I have one but it has sort of the same issue just not as bad since it is closer to the barrel. I try aiming it straight out so the POI is just above the dot by same distance the barrel is higher than the laser. That way I know poi will almost always be just above the dot. Doesn't work when the rat is on a skinny branch though. The laser does not hold zero very well either.

red dots are great for close up work...1 x power.. you look through it and put the dot on your 'volunteer' and make his/her day.
99% of the time it's the shooter, not the gun.

Can you set-up your blind further away from the likely target zone?

Or maybe set up a few bait piles out at the furthest distances from your blind.

And just pass on the very close shots. You'll get another shot at them another time.

When I run into a squirrel that is maybe 5 feet from me, I just shoot from the hip. You can practice those shots. But a rat is a much smaller target.

I do the same with rabbit with a shotgun - all shot from the hip when they flush and run from very close to me. Before, I tried shouldering and aiming, but those rabbits were gone by the time I got set-up and I'm very quick.

The brushy stream banks I'm usually shooting are not conducive to angle shots. Pretty much have to go at right angles the see the ground where the rats are. The stream abuts my back patio.

I may have to try out a red dot to see what it's like. Still seems like it would sit high.

Mount it on the rail in front of the magazine so you can just barely see the dot over the mag. I have a scope mounted that way with a one piece mount on my .25 Marauder. It works pretty good.

The eyepiece of your scope is forward of the mag? My bugbuster doesn't have that much relief.

How does a red dot work? There are no forward sights to align to? Do you have to hold your head in exactly the same place each shot? I guess I can research that.

No, the eye piece is behind, and the body just barely clears the mag. I was just illustrating the point that you do not have to use the front and rear rails. Just the front or just the rear works fine. Aimpoint is the only red dot I have used. If you can see the dot on the target its good... even if you have the gun cocked all out of position.

Did a little research on red dots and decided to try one. I think I found a smoking hot deal:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00200E0HM

I got it for $58 and free overnight shipping from Amazon. It is already with fedex and arrives tomorrow.
I went back and noticed:
49.99 and free shipping. (Not from Amazon and not overnight though

You need a set of these to mount it though. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007BN ... UTF8&psc=1

Oh snap!

Actually I do have adapters already but they are not low profile like that. I will use the ones I have until Wednesday when the ones you pointed out arrive.
