Hey Dogwood, based on your post I got a little nervous, since I haven't heard from James in about two months. I left a voice mail and sent an email, I did get a response to the email, he said he's a little behind but working hard to get caught up, he received a large order from one of his commercial clients that messed with his schedule. I think we're still good. If you send me an email, I'll forward his email for you to read.

Regards, Don

well after several months, numerous unanswered emails and phone messages I've filed for a refund with paypal and my credit card,
paypal came back as said it was past their allotted time and wouldn't be doing anything about it, credit card said - here's your money, we'll get on it.

Once the CC got int the act paypal decided it might try after all

anywho, I highly recommend against doing business with James, even though from what I've seen and read he makes a very nice stock, if you're lucky enough to get it from him, or can wait 1 to 2 years.

his business skills seem to be none existent...

I'm really bummed as I wanted that stock and now it seems I've also missed out on the nice tactical aluminum stock that was briefly being made

I even bought the stuff to finish it, so though I'm getting my money back it's still costing me something other than lost time.

so once again I'm searching for a descent, reasonably priced stock for my Mrod

why don't you try to make one?

i was wondering to buy a stock to my discovery too, but when i asked prices all came around 400-600$, man the discovery costs 250 there's no way i spent so much money on a stock, so i decided to try making one.

I spent about 200$ in tools, and 50$ on wood (now i have wood to make about 7 stocks). note that it's my really first job on wood and never made nothing like this before.
you can see the result here:

Beautiful work on that stock, I actually kicked around the idea of trying to make one myself, mostly comes down to a lack of time and skill.

I just don't have the patience it takes to make things in wood that don't look like crap when I'm done

I sent an email to what I hoped was a possible alternative, but I've heard nothing in return yet - shades of James.

I might just have to make one myself

Just found this site http://rifle-stocks.com/laminated_blanks.htm

just emailed rifle-stocks.com, they will sell un-inletted stocks - 4 to 6 week lead time

they have some nice looking stocks, about a $165 for a sweet laminated thumbhole stock.

of course inletting is probably the hardest part of the stock making process (well at least getting tit right :D )

still no response from the "other" air rifle stock maker - damn are all the air rifle stock guys cave dwellers who can't use email?

You should read the stories on the A Team site : http://ateam.100free.com/DaveG.htm

:o

BTW, Steve Corcoran and Paul Bishop seem to have pretty good reputations :)

I think that the problem with stock making is that it takes a lot of time to make a stock, and I would imagine that it's very easy for a stock maker to get hopelessly behind, especially when a hot rifle comes out. I also imagine that it could quickly transform from something that you love to do into something resembling oppressive drudgery. And some craftsman may know their way around a workshop but don't have a real good grasp on dealing with people or running a business. Just an observation.

Of course, if you could somehow pay half upfront for the stock and the other half on delivery (maybe from an escrow account), there would be a much greater incentive for the stock maker to move it along. As long as they have all your money up front, the flakey ones have all the leverage, and not much incentive.

I wrote James about 3 or 4 weeks ago inquiring about 2 stocks I wanted to purchase. I never got a reply. Not a good sign, and i quickly decided I didn't want to take the chance.

too true, stock making does take quite a bit of time, main reason I was willing to give James as much as I did, that and what I've been able to find about him, says he can be slow but he does come through.

I've seen Steve and Paul's work, fantastic pieces of art and way more than my rifle  ain't going to happen.

I will probably get one of those un-inletted stocks after the James business is finished, CC is pushing paypal, I actually have my money already but they give the vendor in question 60 days, so better not to spend it at this point.

Just to do a little investigation, I looked up James Linthicum's Paypal email business address on Paypal. This is what it says:

Is it possible that James has NO completed Paypal transactions?? Or is this a bug in Paypal? Does anybody know?

I would love to order a stock from him, but the signs just don't look good.
