Results with the new and improved AirgunExporter regulator

Postby AlanMcD » Sat Feb 22, 2014 3:49 pm

I installed my new version of the AirgunExporter regulator in my .22 cal Gen I Marauder, and I am extremely pleased with it. I had been in pursuit of the ability to shoot at ~32 FPE with high consistency in the shot cycle in order to have the most consistent “barrel harmonics” possible, and “regulated” seemed the best way to do this. With the guidance of our own Motorhead, I was able to make mods to the air flow path that allowed me to achieve this goal.

I had an earlier post with the original version of the regulator, in which I was able to achieve ~29 FPE with JSB 18.1 grain pellets, and the airflow path was only slightly modified in that configuration. You can read it here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8161

I making this post to convey several things: first, that I believe the new regulator to be an outstanding product – one that I highly recommend (if interested, contact Vincent Van Gerven at AirgunExporter: [email protected] , and do know that I have no business or personal relationship with Vincent but I found him great to deal with). Second, to thank Motorhead for his guidance on my quest (info on the mods made and his lightweight hammer is here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8270), and third, to show the results so that anyone interested in “high power” regulation can know that it can be achieved. Here is a picture of this beautiful regulator, with the attached plenum and gauge hole:

Since I was wanted the power, I did drill out and grind away part of the material in the plenum chamber opposite the gauge hole before I installed the regulator. Here is a picture of the inside of the plenum area, but like an idiot I forgot to take a picture when I was done with my mods (which is probably just as well, since the regulator is a beautifully crafted thing and my mods made it look like trash by comparison). But you should be able to understand the idea of what I did just by seeing the before picture:

Also prior to installing the regulator, I heavily modified the air flow path as follows described in the picture with the shot string. Bottom line: I now have 40 very consistent shots at an average of just over 32 FPE. I tested things at max hammer energy, and I can go as high as 35 FPE with JSB 18.1 pellets, and probably higher with Baracudas, so there is plenty of energy available if one wants to go down this path. Here is the shot string:

I still have work to do to identify the speed that gives me the best accuracy first, and the most shots as a secondary concern, and I plan to enjoy finding those results.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be glad to share what I learned, and thanks again to Vincent and Motorhead!

Alan,
So cool the NEW version Regs are working so well !!

Wish to make note, This picture Image
That opened up area you see has nearly Twice that volume other side of the center hole ( which is for gauge ) ... Combined the plenum volume is pretty large ;)

35 shots at that power is outstanding ... 5 more off regulation like a card up your sleeve ( Aka: Cheating  )

My original R&D in the .22 cal was at a tad less power, so using less air .... it too was pretty impressive making 40 shots on regulation and 10 past :D

Good job !!

Is the regulator maxed out at 130 bar? Has anyone tried this on a 25 cal? im wondering if you'd be able to get the same energy, 35 ft lbs, and 35 shots with that extreme spread might be good for inside 60 yards.

Scott,

Yes, there is much more plenum volume on the other side of that "ring" of material for the gauge hole, as seen in the picture below. I wanted to open up that area partially for the extra 1.5 cc of air space (might as well have it available, right?) but mostly or improved airflow from the other portion of the plenum chamber. I wanted the valve to be able to have the highest sustained pressure as possible at the poppet once the air started to flow, and I figured that this mod could only help and could not hurt. I did not try it without the mod, but maybe I should have.

JDUB,

If I recall correctly, the regulator can be set as high as 170 bar for more power, but the higher it is set the fewer shots you get on the regulator. I do not know if anyone has tried it on a .25 cal yet.

Truth be told
Both of the Reg plenums of this current style I have built rigs with have been modified. Set that plenum body up in the mill between V blocks and plunged a 1/2" end mill ( off center to miss gauge thread area ) taking out Part of that web area. Indeed picked up some more volume and decreased flow resistance threw & between chambers ;)

Just stating it can be done if willing wanting ... tho not honestly required IMO on the same breath 8-)

So what happens if you fill to 3300 psi? Do you get proportionately more good shots?

Also, does the string seem a bit bouncy to you? Maybe it is the high resolution of your graph, but it looks much more bouncy than I would expect with a regulator.

25 W-rod | 08 shots @ 70 FPE -2% | 3100 fill
25 M-rod | 40 shots @ 35 FPE -4% | 3100 fill
22 M-rod | 51 shots @ 25 FPE -4% | 3100 fill
17 M-rod | 50 shots @ 19 FPE -4% | 2500 fill
25 P_rod | 16 shots @ 29 FPE -3% | 2100 fill

never fill over 3000 psi, the factory set a max pressure rating for a reason..
