Converting my .22 to a .25? Should I do it?

Postby Nickdizonc » Wed Feb 11, 2015 2:58 pm

Due to budget constraints and impatience, I'm considering converting my .22 to a .25. After all the machine work I've been doing on my gun recently which has been miraculously successful(due to awesome members/MROD DIY GURUS ALANMCD and RayK:D) and the routine breakdown of my rifle all the way down to just a bag of parts, I feel I am capable of such a project. I've seen that this conversion is possible but are there any sacrifices nothing in terms of performance over a factory stock .25? I plan on using my .22 valve since I've modified the valve exhaust to 11/64 and I've made my own TP SLEEVE with air brake tubing (ALANMCD you ROCK!!!) So I believe my valve will surpass that of the stock .25 as far as airflow and overall output. So at this point all I would need would be a complete .25 cal upper assembly correct? and simply replace my valve with the stock on and just replace all the ORINGS/seals for good measure? I can't think of anything else I really would need. Unless it's more advisable to simply get the .25 upper assy. Complete with the .25 valve and TP and simply modify that valve vs installing my .22 modified valve. I don't want to wait months to get a .25 and I think I have just enough marbles stashed in the sock drawer to make this more cost efficient .25 conversion happen. Thoughts?

You pretty much need the whole upper to convert to 25. Some have priced it out and it is expensive. The usual recommendation is to sell the 22 and buy a used 25.

If you are stuck with the 22, maybe you should try it on your coons while saving up for maybe getting a 25 down the road.

Predators don't fit the stock 22 Magazine, but it is an easy mod to make it a little larger so they will fit. Someone posted a youtube video on one way to mod them.

You could try the 21 grain Barracudas. They can be accurate in some 22 M-rods.

To get more FPE, try some of the .22 cal JSB 25g Monsters. No it's not going to replace a .25 cal, but if your barrel will shoot them, you will get more energy downrange.
Or do like Ray suggested. Sell the .22 and buy a used .25. Or try a trade, someone may have a .25 and would rather have a .22.

I too am looking to do the .25 cal transformation from .22. It's hard to believe it will be that costly. I am thinking tops maybe $150 for all the upper parts but I haven't cost them yet. I have also done a few valve,tp, custom hammer spring and barrel tp mods which puts my 22 gen 2 at 3 shots at 50 to 52 fpe or 15 shots at 45 fpe. The problem is that the jsb 25.39's are going a little to fast for the accuracy. Low and behold someone posted about these pellets for the 22 that should do the ticket and may make me forget about the 25 conversion.

Someone priced it out here viewtopic.php?f=30&t=5368

$235 for the parts and it may be more now.

Refurbished marauders were going for $325 shipped.

After some great advice from a new friend, I'm staying the course and sticking with the .22. ill get a .25 Im sure, but for now I'm gonna make any and all useful and practical mods to my rifle to squeeze all the potential she has and then I'm gonna shoot the crap out of her. I've got 10 rds. if a coon doesn't want to say hello to my little friend the first time, I'll introduce him to 9 more of my little friendsXD

OK so I went out 2 days ago back to a ranch I had been assisting a buddy of mine get rid of raccoons. For the second time, I had to fire multiple rounds to terminate the animal with my .22 Synrod AFTER an initial HEADSHOT ( approx. 1/4 in above eye level in between the eyes. long story short, my .25 Mrod just came in his morning. let's see what all the fuss is about with these big bite .25's. :D RayK if you see this, this is all your doing LMAO! That said thanks!

Did the shot penetrate the skull and didn't go deep enough, or did the pellet bounce off from the angle of impact?
