New 177 Marauder here

Postby mnormand » Fri Mar 14, 2014 6:09 pm

Hello to all.. first post here.

Just got my Pyramid Air 177 package deal.

First pcp gun for me. Got tired of my professionally tuned 2 yr old Weihrauch HW50 springer, I'm just an average shooter, and could never get the proper hold technique down perfect on the occasional random backyard squirrel pests. Out of the many I got, I still missed too many headshots.

Unboxed, read all directions, strapped on the Burris Timberline 4x14 AO, Benji handpump to about 2500, and let her rip with the Ben Premium heavy pellets that came with it. On outside backporch, about 15 yards, into a homemade pellet stop... a 5gal bucket stuffed with a few old books then carpet layers to hold it tight. Laid over on side, clothespin a target to the edge, and let it hang down across opening. Worked pretty good! About 20 shots, man I'm liking this a lot!

Been watching all the youtubes I could find, so was fairly familiar. I don't really plan to do much tuning, other than maybe find some simple trigger mods, then again maybe not. My dive shop about 2 miles from here will fill for
$6 to 3000, so I'll probably recon that a bit later and get a tank. That sounds pretty cheap I would think?

Pretty happy so far, next squirrel(s) chewing up my house, stealing figs, satsumas, garden vege's better watch out! Gonna be trouble !  Every squirrel gets eaten by family here, we cook everything!
If anything, I would opt for a tune that would maximize shots between refills with a middle of the road velocity, but we'll cross that bridge later. I would probably ship and let the pros handle it, I just have too many other hobbies going on at once!

I predict you will soon run out of squirrels ;)

Good choice on the 177 for backyard use. They get pretty good shot count even without tuning.

But you can get 60 good shots (with small 3% ES) per fill with just a bit of tuning yourself. You just need a chrony, lots of pellets, and some time.

That sexy german springer is going to gather alot of dust unless you sell it to finance a carbon fiber tank or chronograph. I'm sure someone here would guide you to a more efficient tune without you having to ship it anywhere. Them squirrels are in for an education

This is a question for Ray: would he be able to use an aluminum 80 tank with your efficient .177 tune? What is your fill pressure with your .177? At what pressure do you refill?

Good Luck Mnorman! You are going to be so hooke on PCP guns. :D

If you only have access to a hand pump or a 3000 psi SCUBA tank, the best tune is to tune for 2500 psi fill. That way you will be able to get lots of fills from your tank or without too much pumping effort.

If you have 4500 psi SCBA, tune for 3000 or even 32000 psi and get max power.

Here are two links to useful data. The first is the volumes of various airgun reserviors, (I got these from the Yellow Forum):

http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/Tanks/GunVolumes.html

The next is a fill Calculator:

Have fun!

takes me several months to get down to 2000 before i get a refill...at 2000 i fill all my paintball bottles for other uses...and i shoot about a 100 a day on a slow day..
99% of the time it's the shooter, not the gun.

Are you keeping rough count? How many have you sent on to squirrel heaven?

Lucky you that they have a large army and plenty of replacements.....
