Barrel band curiosity

Postby Curtisair » Thu May 24, 2012 9:06 pm

A buddy of mine just picked up his new Mrod in .177 today and asked me if I would put a depinger in his gun before we went and aired it all the way up. I said sure because it takes all of 15 minutes and it does make a difference in reducing the "ping". What I noticed was, on my Mrod #31212xxxx the barrel band has a generous gap of about 2mm all the way around between the band and the shroud. His Mrod #51012xxxx has only a hairs width gap between his band and the shroud. Just curious, and I wanted to post my findings..

Cheers,

Curtis

The outer dimensions is his band is smaller, mine measures from top to bottom 2.303"
His measures 2.277".
The width across the band on mine at the barrel c/l is 1.158, his is 1.103.
Where the band attaches to the air reservoir they measure the same 1.249.
His has more of a taper from the air rez to the shroud than mine does and his wall thickness of the band around the shroud appears to be slightly thicker. Visually 2 different parts.

What kind of space do you guys see on your guns between the band and the shroud?

Just checked and the .177, .22, and .25 all use the same Barrel Band part # 2563-008. I am at work and do not have my gun handy to check it. Interesting.

That was one of the things I was wondering about, if my Mrod may have been shipped out with a .25 band on it. My buddy's band looks like it is made to fit his gun, a cleaner look without a lot of space between the shroud and the band. I know the barrel is free float and just assumed the band was there to prevent the barrel from bending past it's point of return to zero. We haven't shot his yet, but mine shoots really really well, on a calm day out to 50 yds it groups better than my high dollar rimfires.

Cheers,

Curtis

The serial numbers tell much of the story - the first digits are the month and year it was produced.

Yours is from March 2012 and his is from May 2010. Crosman had many issues with band touching the shrouds when the M-Rod was launched. People could not easily adjust it out with them smaller clearance. So wehn they came out with the .25 they went to a larger opening in the band and made it common on all three calibers.

As you say, the band is just an "insurance policy", and you don't want it to touch. I ended up ordering a new larger band for mine (May of 2009) to insure plenty of clearnce . . .
