Modifying 22 BoreSnake to clean M-rod

Postby RayK » Sat Oct 26, 2013 10:59 am

Hi all.

I bought a 22 boresnake to clean my airguns, but I've heard the brass brushes can damage the airgun barrels. I had read about it before, but Mike at Citrus also recommended it to me, but he said he cuts the brushes off and resews the pull cord to the snake.

I found it was not difficult to open up the hollow boresnake and push the end of the brush through the weave. Then I was able to grab it with some vice grips and pull it out. It only took a few minutes and no cutting or sewing required. It works great - even better than the mono with 7.8" cotton rounds I was using.

That video was painful to watch. He make a 2 minute job into 11 minutes - and he even sped up the part where he works out the brush.

All you need to do is poke the end of the brush through the wall of the hollow weave snake, then grab the tip with some vice grips and pull. It comes right out in less than a second. Mine had two brushes inside, so I repeated for the second brush.

Yes, that guy did it the way I did and it took less than one minute.

I love the .22 boresnake approach, and did the same thing. I applied a good amount of Ballistol to mine - enough to clean, but not enough that it drips when I pull it though - and keep it in a zip lock bag. I stick a straw up the baffles, and it is easy to pull it though every tin or so (although I did have to cut down the length of the brass weight). This, coupled with lubing my pellets with Ballistol, takes care of all the breech o-ring lube I need - I used to use the boresnake dry, but found it so much better with the Ballistol and it does double duty that way.

I'm really liking this BoreSnake for cleaning my Marauders. It works so much better than pulling patches through with the flared mono/weedwacker line.

And in just a few pulls, the barrel is so clean and it does not seem to hurt the breech o-ring.

I did remove my barrel to clean it though. That's just how I like to do things with these Marauders. And they are so easy to work on.

To Rayk, and in fact all who posted links to the videos...you are geniuses!

And to think I sent an email to Boresnake asking why they didn't make a .22 airgun version, duh! Why would they when it's as easy as this to make your own?

Thanks for an awesome tip! Now, where did I put my .22 rimfire boresnake???

If you plan to use it through the breech without removing the bolt (removing bolt on MR1 is super easy wereas removing bolt from MR2 - the new synrod - is a lot more work), you will need to shorten or remove the little brass eyelet that is on the tip of the cord - as is shown in one of the videos.
