Sticking .25 cal. Magazine !!

Postby hill » Sat Dec 14, 2013 2:35 pm

Been having my (.25 cal. only) magazines stick after the last shot.

Cock the rifle shoot, cock the rifle shoot, etc., etc.. If I hadn't counted the shots (which I usually don't - usually rely on the bolt not being able to cycle again after the 8th shot) cock the rifle shoot NOTHING but air - did not index to the dead spot.

Took the magazines apart and sprayed the contacting surfaces/areas with this (pic) dry lube (home improvements stores usually have it) and let the parts sit overnight. *This stuff dries to a "dry film", so unlike "wet" lubricants, it won't attract dust, dirt, lint, etc..*

Put the magazines back together again and :D , now they are are working properly.

The dry lube will only be a patch job to try to reduce friction from dirt and grit.

The real cause for this is a weak spring. If you tend to keep your mags fully loaded, the spring is under heavy tension and will weaken. I left for a week straight like this, its very likely it will stick on that last shot. I always empty y mags now with a wooden dowel if I'm done shooting for the day, and don't load up spare mags unless I KNOW I'll need them.

This has happened with about 7 magazines that I have purchased.

I have never had this happen with my .22 cal. magazines, even though I treat them the same.

I will keep this thread up to date over the next few days - weeks.

Thanks

I have had it happen to Prod, 22 and 25 cal Mrod mags. I suspect it is the springs, but others report cleaning/lubing/adjusting fixes it. I try to do what Shawn says, not leaving them wound up. But like have the mag in the gun, ready to go.

I'm just sharing my experience.

I leave my eight 25 cal magazines loaded all the time for long periods and I've never had a problem of any kind with them.

I did see a few of my nine 22 caliber magazines sticking on the last pellet. I re-adjusted the barrel so there was not so much tension on the magazine and didn't have any more problems.

Sticking .25 cal. Magazine !!

Postby BadBob86 » Mon Dec 16, 2013 12:32 am

I had this happen with one of my .25 mags, I took it out of use and have been meaning to fix it, I'll give this a try. Never had any problems with the other four I own.

I also never leave my mags loaded unless they will be used imminently. I do the same with firearms, with the exception of my carry rigs which are rotated in/out.

The only mag I've ever seen that explicitly states it will do no harm to store it loaded indefinitely, is my 100rd Beta C-Mag (drum) for the AR, and I still don't like doing it...

Good thing is, MROD mags are cheap and easily replaced, no sense worrying too much!

Both of my brand new .25 mags would not rotate to load the 8th round without wiggling the bolt or tapping the mag, after a few days of this I took them apart and noticed there are three holes you can put the spring tab into, I changed the hole the spring tab was in putting more preload on the spring and now the mags work fine.

That's what I did...

Sometimes all it takes is loosening the Allen ave a little bit...
